Five thousand government representatives from 134 countries will meet in Seattle, USA, on 29 November. This is the first general meeting of the WTO since it was established in 1995, taking over from the former world trade body, GATT. The transition to a market based capitalist economy in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union has blighted the lives of millions.
