As we go to press, there is the possibility that this autumn three trade unions will be conducting ballots for national strike action – the civil service union PCS, teachers in the National Education Union (NEU) in schools, and further education lecturers in the University and College Union (UCU). Well over half a million public sector workers could be involved in winter strikes. This would be significant at any time – but what’s really significant is that this is just three months into Andy Burnham’s premiership.
